Science WOW Day 8.3.22
We enjoyed the Year 2 Science WOW day with Aimee from Mad Science.
We participated in two workshops. The first workshop was about materials and we carried out three investigations. We began with an investigation about floating and sinking. We made a solution of three different liquids and then tested various materials to see if they would sink or float. We found that metal sinks and wood floats. Next we made boats out of tin foil to investigate if all metal sinks. We carefully shaped our boats and found that tin foil floats. We tested the efficiency of our boats by seeing how many metal nuts they would hold before they sank. We were surprised at the number of nuts our small tin foil boats could hold! Finally we made bouncy balls by mixing two different compounds of rubber powder, PVA powder and water. When the balls are fully dry we will test them to see which compound produced the most bouncy ball!
Our afternoon workshop was about animals. We enjoyed looking at animal skeletons and matching them with photographs of animals. Some were tricky to identify e.g. a baboon, a camel and an owl. Next we sorted model animals into vertebrates and invertebrates. After that we sorted them into reptiles, amphibians, mammals, birds and fish. We thought about how we classified the animals into the groups e.g. mammals give birth to live young and birds have feathers and lay eggs. We looked at animal foot print shapes and made some Plaster of Paris foot print molds.
We had a really great day!
